Meet Oscar Pascasio
How long have you been playing the piano? When did you first discover the piano? How did it happen?
I started playing the piano at 4-5 years old, my grandfather was a musician and I listened to him play the piano. When he finished I tried to play the same thing and I developed the absolute ear. I liked to play everything I heard and I played all day. The first thing I did when I left school was to play the piano.
Did you take lessons? If so, how many years?
My grandfather was my first teacher, then I received classes at the Conservatory and I was studying until I got the Superior Piano Degree in Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
What was the first song you ever wrote?
When I was a teenager I wrote songs but I never wrote them so they got lost. It was in 2011 when I began to compose, an amateur friend encouraged me and I composed my first work “The first time” I premiered on June 21 at the Music Festival
What was the first song you recorded and released?
In 2012 I recorded several songs and uploaded them to YouTube, they liked them a lot and it was the audience who encouraged me to record an album. In 2013 I recorded “La ribera del Pisuerga”, my first album and it was a success.
What inspires you?
My love for the soundtracks is the one that marks a style in my compositions and my music has a sentimental, romantic, melancholic, melodic and deep character, reflecting experiences and feelings lived. Nature inspires me a lot
How do you begin your songwriting/composing process?
I rarely feel at the piano to compose, sometimes I walk and the music comes to me. I have come to compose entire songs in my head, then I sit at the piano and play them. The first thing I do is record them so as not to forget the melodies and then I develop them.
What is the perfect environment for you to inspire creativity?
I like being alone at home or in my workplace (I'm a teacher) with nothing to distract me, just me and my piano. Without a doubt Nature is my greatest source of inspiration.
If you had to pick one artist that inspires you, or that you aspire to follow in their footsteps, who would it be?
Ludovico Einaudi is currently a reference for all pianists, his music is unique and inspires us all. He is a very special musician, thanks to him many pianists began to compose.
Aside from that, who are your musical role models?
I like the music of Chopin and Beethoven. I like romantic piano music, I'm very inspired by Shoshana Michel, Lynn Yew Evers, Andy Tallent or Javi Lobe. There are such wonderful independent musicians …
Where do you hope to be with your music in a year? 5 years?
My music is currently heard all over the world, I never imagined it. I just hope that my music continues to excite me and to continue composing so that my fans continue to enjoy my music. I do not know where I will arrive, I have won several international awards and I am becoming better known. I just hope everything stays the same.
How much do you practice each day?
When I have concerts I rehearse several hours a day but I am a teacher and I have small children so I don't have much time to practice.
What do you love most about being a pianist?
What I like most is to play live and see the faces of my fans. They really enjoy and I feel very good. My music will be there forever, that's wonderful.
